Canine Influenza

Over the last few weeks we have seen several cases of the canine influenza virus. The “canine influenza virus” is an influenza A H3N8 influenza virus that was originally an equine (horse) influenza virus. This virus is not contagious to humans but can now spread between dogs. It is very important to protect your dog from this virus. There is no cure. If your dog exhibits any signs of coughing, sneezing, fever, nasal discharge, as well as a sudden change in activity level immediately see your veterinarian. Tell the doctor if your dog recently boarded at a kennel or played at a dog park. Use only boarding kennels, doggie day care facilities, and vet clinics that you trust and that are clean and well ventilated. We are now vaccinating for the influenza. This is a vaccine that needs to be boosted three weeks after the first vaccine. Please call our office to schedule an appointment.
