Today we saw a rabbit in our office from Sterling VA with a malocclusion(misalignment of teeth). Rabbits are hypsodonts, meaning that their teeth grow continually, throughout their life. Dental malocclusion in rabbits are not uncommon. Clipping the teeth rather than filing or grinding them down can be dangerous, since micro-fractures of the tooth from clipping can travel below the gum line. This can cause bacterial infection that can be life-threatening. It is best to have a rabbit-experienced veterinarian do regular dental checkups as part of your bunny's wellness exam even if your rabbit has perfectly aligned incisors.
