Why we do what we do.

If you ask people in the veterinary field why they chose this as their career, chances are they won't say the money, or the fame. The majority of us do it out of love and sincere compassion for our furry friends. We do this so that others may know the unconditional love that a pet offers. I myself got my certification for Ophthalmic Assisting from Georgetown University in Washington,DC and after working in that field for several years I decided to pursue my passion: helping those without a voice. As a little girl I wanted to be a Veterinarian, but I learned the hard way that if you play in school you pay later in life. I now know that it is harder to become a Veterinarian (doctor for animals) than it is to become a doctor for humans! If you are in the field of helping animals you already know what a hard job we have. Everyday we see animals that are abused, neglected, sick or dying. We see people who care and those that are not aware. We see miracles happen and we see people lose their closest friends. People often ask me if I have seen movies like "Marley and Me"? I just smile and say no, but in my head I think I see that movie played out in my office almost everyday. People may think that they are just pets, but to those of us that know that they are so much more than that, I'd like to say "thank you" for doing what you do. Here is just one of the reasons I do what I do. He has been adopted from the wonderful Hart Organization!

  1. Dr. Compassion,

I would like to say thank you for what you are doing for the helpless, homeless and voiceless--to say from the bottom of my heart sounds to cliché, but I wish to God there were more people like you in this world. I too, am an animal lover, and it breaks my heart daily to see the cruelty, neglect and abuse cats and dogs live each day. I will never understand how one can treat these creatures with such contempt, disregard and callousness. Animals --very much like people --respond in the same way..if you love them...they will love you. If you hurt them...they learn to fear and try to protect themselves --just as people do.

I want to say thank you to all the people like you, who make their life mission not just to say they care about animals but Do!.

I recently got bitten helping another kitty (who was a black kitty and a stray) I had to get an IV with antibiotics for 5 days, but that was nothing compared to the pain this kitty had endured who was less than 2 yrs old. And all of his life was spent in the streets except for his last night –that was spent at my house. Hunger, Fear, Cold, Pain, Loneliness and so many other emotions I am sure I could not know he endured for 2 years --- the bite I received was not out of maliciousness, but out of his fear (fight or flight) and I knew that. This little “fighter” had a heart disease, and a blood clot had traveled from the heart down to his spine and lodged there and so his back legs were paralyzed, he had to drag his body when I found him. I wanted so bad to save him and give him a shot at life, but all I could do was to let him die in my arms with dignity and the knowledge he was loved. I want to say to the Hart Rescue Organization – THANK YOU, you responded when all others did not. You cared even though you never met my “fighter” you helped, you made a difference. To the volunteers --you have my complete respect and appreciation and will have my pocket book as soon I am able to contribute.

But if I could count the number of times, someone asked me if the cat had it shots (for fear of rabies) I would have quite a few $$. I really want to ask those who think of Rabies 1st ......Is this question really legitimate??? And yes I am serious...I now really believe the reason for this question is nothing more than an a cop out to assuage one’s conscience for turning his/her head the other way. Shame on those who think that way! Even if the cat did have rabies…so what? I get shots for 3 days…but I save a helpless kitten or cat from days or weeks of torturous pain! To put it in perspective.. 1 day for us is 7 days to them (3 days to us is 21 days of pain to them)….think about that long and hard for the next time you see a stray or any animal.
